Play, Movement and Meaning: The Quiet Revolution Behind MultiBall

Play, Movement and Meaning: The Quiet Revolution Behind MultiBall

A World That Forgot to Move

We spend more time looking at screens than ever before, yet rarely move while doing so.According to the World Health Organization, more than 80 percent of adolescents and a quarter of all adults do not reach the minimum recommended levels of daily activity.

The effects reach beyond physical health. In classrooms, children struggle to focus. In offices, energy fades. In families, shared experiences are increasingly digital and solitary.

MultiBall was born from a simple observation. If technology has changed how we live, perhaps it can also help us find our way back to movement.

The Idea of Meaningful Interaction

When designer and entrepreneur Markos Kern began developing MultiBall, the goal was never just to build another gaming system. The aim was to create a form of interactive play that could engage people physically and mentally at the same time.

The result is a wall that reacts to motion, sound and light, transforming simple movement into an experience that connects people rather than isolating them.Teachers use it to make lessons active. Coaches integrate it into training sessions. Hotels and community centers use it to bring strangers together.

It is technology that works best when people share a space.

Movement as a Language

Scientific research confirms what intuition has always told us: learning and movement are deeply connected.Children who move while studying remember more. Physical activity increases brain activity and emotional stability. Even twenty minutes of play can sharpen concentration for hours.

MultiBall draws on this connection. A wall becomes a stage for focus, laughter and collaboration. The system encourages both digital literacy and physical literacy, teaching a new generation to interact with technology in a healthier and more social way.

An Evolving Experiment

In nearly ten years, MultiBall installations have appeared in indoor playgrounds, schools, hotels, gyms, universities, offices and public spaces around the world. The concept has received international awards for design and innovation, but the most meaningful results often happen quietly: a teacher watching disengaged students come alive, or an older visitor rediscovering the simple joy of play.

The company’s team of engineers, educators and artists continues to refine the experience, exploring how sound, motion and interaction can shape behavior. Each project starts with the same question: how can this make people move and connect in a meaningful way.

A Philosophy of Play

Kern’s book Quantensprung expands on the ideas that shaped the company. It describes a world in which technology is not rejected but reimagined as a tool for consciousness and human growth.

Play, he argues, is one of the oldest forms of learning. In combining it with modern tools, we rediscover something essential the ability to engage our senses, our minds and one another.

MultiBall stands at that intersection, where digital systems become instruments of movement and awareness rather than distraction.

Looking Ahead

The project continues to evolve. New applications in sports training, education and therapy are being developed with partners worldwide. The aim remains simple: to keep finding ways in which interactive technology can inspire motion, curiosity and connection.

It is not a product so much as a living experiment in how people and technology can grow together. Explore the use cases to see how interactive play is promoting movement and joy.
